SWOP is a currency exchange rate API. We fetch current and historical exchange rates from various National Banks and aggregate them in an easy to query way.
What's special about SWOP is that each rate comes with detailed information about it's source. Besides that SWOP offers a GraphQL endpoint and we're planning to add a gRPC endpoint in the near future.

In finance, an exchange rate is the rate at which one currency will be exchanged for another. Consider it as the value of one country's currency in relation to another currency. Currency exchange rates are determined in the foreign exchange market, which is open to a multitude of buyers and sellers that trade continuously 24/7, except for weekends. As a result there is not one true exchange rate from one currency to another, but a number of exchange rates (e.g. at different national banks) per currency pair (base/quote currency) at any given time.

SWOP takes a multitude of sources into consideration, among them various national banks around the world. Using these source rates SWOP calculates an averaged rate per currency pair to harmonize the deltas between the sources. For full transparency, all paid plans provide meta-data for every rate that discloses what it's based on. We feel that gives extra confidence in the accuracy and timeliness of the data SWOP provides to its customers.

In foreign exchange trading, currencies are quoted in terms of a currency pair. The base currency is the first in the pair, the second is known as the quote currency. The base currency is the one against which exchange rates are generally quoted in a given country e.g. EUR/USD - the Euro is the base currency and US-Dollar is the quote currency.

SWOP offers exchange rates between 191 currencies. Most of them are still actively traded and used as of today. Others existed only for certain periods of time (e.g. most European currencies before the Euro) and are available as historical rates.
